Since coming into this world, David had not been one to actively throw himself into the line of danger. Part of that was hiding his powers. A lot of it was the fact that he didn’t see a reason to hurt himself for others. Maybe he was a bit jaded. But the list of people qualified to disable bombs, defend themselves, and protect the Porter isn’t the greatest. Someone can do all of this? Even shorter.

When other people run away, David runs towards and abandons his final secret, blades made of psychic energy forming in his hands as he leaves others to hit the main group approaching the Porter, David slides into cover beside it. The weapons are his defense, ready to keep himself safe. But his mind is already tuning out, delving into the explosives. He has to shut these down.

Which of course means he might not notice someone approaching.
