THE FRACTURED WORLD: ARRIVAL

A
rrival for some goes all but unnoticed. It's a sudden shiver, the sensation of being watched... and then nothing at all. Life continues serenely as it always has. The only indication of any change comes with sleep, wrapped in dreams: vague and distant echo imagery of another life, melting away in the morning.

F
or others, arrival is a sharp jolt. In the space of a single blink, they find themselves in an unfamiliar world, surrounded by the trappings of a life they have not lived. They are replacements, spirits taking possession of bodies belonging to people very much like themselves...

A
nd for the rest, arrival is a procedure. Routine. Those ported in to the Fractured World wake hazily in the comfortably dim light of the Porter room, laid out on an exam table. Their wounds, if they remember having any, have been healed— and even those who remember their own deaths find themselves miraculously restored. As they regain consciousness, an automatic audio-visual presentation is triggered. Regardless of their backgrounds or physiology, all imPorts 'see' and 'hear' this message as if in their own language:

"Greetings, imPort."
The voice is calm and gently authoritative, almost certainly selected by committee.
"On behalf of the Synod and all imPorts it represents, we welcome you to the planet Earth."

A decidedly non-humanoid robotic arm holds out a palm-sized device and rather insistently demands the new arrival take it. This is the imPort's comm, used for accessing the Porter's database of information, as well as the communications Network— though it won't receive communications from outside the Porter building until carried through one of the many Gates set up in a long, crescent-shaped array on the far side of the room.

As each Gate is approached, information about the faction it leads to flashes up on the comm device's screen. Which will you choose?

[ LMK if this assumed CR is not ok! ]

Jin Zixuan has been in Glimmershire ever since he arrived on this world some years ago. Where else would he go, when his wife had made her home here? His duty was to her first and foremost, and so he too became a Seeker of the New Dawn.

He's grown to know most of the familiar faces in Glimmershire, even the ones that only come around every so often. He recognizes the woman sitting in the caf-bar, if not by name, then by face. After ordering his tea, he goes to give her his greetings.

"I see you have returned. I hope your journeys were worthwhile."

[More than okay!]

"Worthwhile might not be the best word," Sypha grimaces. She looks up at the speaker: ah, Jiang Yanli's husband. A pleasant man, who makes it his business to be solicitous to his and his wife's friends and friendly acquaintances: Sypha respects that.

"Please, join me." She motions to the seat across from her, returning his politeness. Now, if only she could remember his name...

He nods his thanks, and seats himself in the chair across from her, placing his cup of tea on the table and allowing it to cool somewhat before he takes a sip.

"If you would not describe it as 'worthwhile,' then what word would you use instead?"

Luckily for him, polite conversation is something he was taught from a very young age. Now, if only he could remember her name...

"Perhaps "routine"?" Sypha suggests. "There was not much happening in the northern faction settlements, and while I gathered stories, most were family histories and not out of the ordinary for newcomers to the Faction. I was able to serve on several juries, but those matters were peacefully concluded, without much fanfare."

She takes a drink then, without any further ado, addresses the sticking point.

"Forgive me, but I do not believe we have ever been formally introduced. I am Sypha Belnades."

"'Routine' is at least better than 'troublesome.'" Better to have the time pass without any fanfare than to become embroiled in one mess or another. That's what Zixuan thinks, anyway.

"Ah--" So she's just going to come out and say it. Well, it's now or never, he supposes. "I suppose it's better not to dance around the misstep of not knowing each other's names."

He gives her a bit of a formal bow. Only a bit of one, because it's impractical to do a full one while seated at a table.

"My name is Jin Zixuan. It is a pleasure to officially meet you, Lady Belnades."

"You are right," Sypha concedes. She generally can deal with whatever troubles arise peacefully, and only ever has had to forcefully subdue a troublemaker twice, and she hopes to keep it that way.

Exercising her magickal abilities is exhilarating and gives Sypha a rush, but she prefers their outcome to help, not harm. Training, mock-combat, and competitions are able to provide her all the outlet she needs to keep her skills - not sharp, but not rusted, either.

"The pleasure is mine, Sir Jin," Sypha raises her glass to him, amused. His partial bow is unexpected but charming, and she feels flattered (though she knows it is a customary thing in Yanli's circles). "Please, you do not have to call me 'Lady'; I have not earned that title. Just Sypha is fine."

The predilection of so many imPorts to address each other using only their given names, with no thought to formal propriety, will always baffle Zixuan. Even after all these years, he just doesn't get it. It's not how he was raised.

But, he's learned that life is made a lot easier when you just swallow your misgivings and call people whatever they want you to call them.

"Very well, Sypha." He will refrain from asking her to call him Zixuan in return. That would be a step too far. "Was your journey back comfortable?"

"It was, actually," Sypha replies. "I was away for so long, it was a good feeling to be heading back to Glimmershire once more. Also, I have been hearing quite a lot about the Gate's construction, so I have been looking forward to seeing it for myself."

She feels fairly ambivalent about the Gate, actually, but the mood of excitement among other DawnSeekers is infectious. Misgivings about warp travel or no, Sypha has been harbouring quite a bit of curiosity about the Gate - what it signifies for the future of the faction, what it represents.

"It has been quite the undertaking," Zixuan admits, sipping his tea calmly. The city had been a buzz of activity for weeks now, ever since construction started. Zixuan does not claim to understand the powerful technological advancements that the Gates represent, but he understands enough to know that building one is a positive step for the good of the DawnSeekers.

"Will you be visiting the build site, now that you are back?"

"I was planning to go tomorrow," Sypha replies. "How far along are they? The last time I was here, it was not yet started."
