[For a fraction of a second, Judd freezes. He had known his mother--his parents had agreed on a co-parenting agreement, especially after the success of creating a Cardinal telepath in Kristine, and the moderately less successful creation (in their eyes) of a low high-range telepath in Walker--but Psy parents weren't known for their warmth in the best of times. His had removed him from the family register at age 10 after his true abilities manifested... And the Arrows didn't do cookies either.]
Psy do not eat cookies, as they contain no nutritional value that can't be provided by other, more efficient means. Sweets in general were to be avoided due to their extra high sugar counts, as sugar addiction could lead to a Psy developing an emotional attachment to the snack.
They've had these kinds of exchanges before - more often than she'd really like to have them, though she understands that things like this just come along with who Judd is - and she responds to it in more or less the same way that she always does.]
... I see. [She says, and then she picks up the wooden spoon in questin.]
[This was one of the major downsides to being stuck in this world. Even a human or a changeling would understand the insinuation that he had made back home. Though he doubted Aisha, the SnowDancer's head chef, would have given up on "fattening him up" (as she put it), she would have at least slightly changed tactics, or given him an out.
Judd wasn't very good at admitting his weaknesses.]
Jane... Have you seen my diet since I've arrived, by any chance?
I don't believe we've been personally introduced, no.
[She smiles at him, and there's an almost coquettish edge to it. Jane knows exactly what she's doing, and it's the flipside of their relationship - the one side bickering endlessly, the other side... this.]
Judd, you do know you're perfectly entitled to say 'no, thank you', don't you? I shan't be insulted.
[He pauses, internally debating something before finally admitting.]
I simply don't know if it will be too much for me.
[Judd has learned that learning flavors had to be taken in small steps, and he hadn't particularly felt adventurous since arriving here. It was easier to fall back to the familiar. To hold onto something from home, no matter how foolish.]
[Jane puffs out a sigh that moves a few stray hairs off her forehead and lets them fall back haphazardly before her eyes. She wipes them out of her eyes with the back of her wrist and then gently wiggles the spoon at him.]
In that case, just have a little bit on the end of your finger and tell me what you think. Would that be alright?
[There's another pause, this time Judd seemingly putting serious thought into her proposition.]
That is an agreeable compromise.
[Ever the diligent Psy, he washes his hands first before scooping a taste of the batter off the spoon with his finger. Everything about the operation is perhaps more methodological than it needs to be.
He licks the batter from his finger. As expected, he was flooded by the sensation of the mixture coming into contact with his taste buds. And that was just a sample. Judd still can't fully understand how everyone else's feels such sensations are normal, but nothing in his life has ever been normal, so why would nutrition be any different?]
As I suspected, there's an overabundance of sugar in your batter.
[She smiles brightly when he agrees, and holds the spoon steady for him. Jane watches him while he tastes the mixture, and when he gives his evaluation she can't help but laugh.]
Of course, it wouldn't be cake without it.
[When she smiles at him, she wrinkles her nose.]
I'm sure I could whip up something more to your tastes, if you'd like.
I wouldn't know. Well I... have had cake, many years ago, but it was at Aisha's--SnowDancer's head chef's--insistence. The children enjoyed it more than Walker and I did.
[But the brothers had been Silent far longer than the children. None of them, not even Sienna, had finished with their conditioning. It was easier for them to adjust.]
Psy nutrition consists of meal bars and nutrient mixes. They're purposefully designed for caloric intake and lack of flavor. From what little I know of chefs, to ask something of that nature of them would be considered an insult.
[Jane grins, and though it quickly fades to a smile that hovers around the corners of her mouth the mirth doesn't disappear from her eyes. She shakes her head, and then skips across the kitchen to pull a tray of muffins from an oven when a time buzzes on top of the counter.]
But! Luckily for you, I'm a zoologist, not a chef.
[Even if she does do far more baking than animal research these days.]

So, do you want the spoon or not?
