FINALE: Synod & Conclusion

The Synod should have ended on the 21st, but a blackout traps all the attendees in the facility. The train won't move. The Gates won't reverse. The anomaly outside would eradicate anything attempting to cross the stygian wasteland. All anyone can do is wait.

On the 23rd, a network message informs all imPorts their time has come to an end. Their presence is tearing this world apart, and in order to save it, the Resistance must destroy the Porter. All imPorts depend on it for survival, and will die along with it—
but humanity will triumph.

THE CATALYST TO
THE FINALE
THE
REBELS
ATTACK

A hastily-assembled team of various faction members rushes to the Porter's defense. When they arrive, they find that their extremist opponents are imPorts themselves. Some of them might have once been called friends. Others have remained in the shadows, sleeper forces of the Resistance. While the saboteurs continue their work, fighters leap into battle against all those who've arrived to defend the Porter.

[OOC: Please tag the above top-level if you'd like some mod-run NPC combat! We'll be able to back/tag several PCs for at least 2 weeks from today.]

Not only must enemy combatants be defeated, but a complex series of timed explosive devices threatens to destroy the Porter controls, forcing a desperate call for technical experts and finesse powers.

Only partway into the showdown, a minor explosion rips through the crowd and takes out combatants on both sides. An alarm begins to scream. Total annihilation has been averted, but the Porter's shields are crumbling.

ESCAPE THE SYNOD

Though the terrorists are now in custody, there's a bigger problem. The facility is no longer safe. The Gates, echoing the damaged Porter, still haven't reversed polarity. Everyone will have to escape via the Death Train, which isn't equipped for so many imPorts in high concentration. It'll need additional shielding and the reprogramming for multiple trips, which means tech-minded imPorts will have to cooperate to overcome its automated settings.

ImPorts must divide into smaller groups because the destination station at the White City may overload too. Batches of ImPorts pile together for the ride in much more cramped quarters than they're used to. Several are injured from the attack, others are dying, and it'll be a long and harrowing journey before they can reach a hospital for treatment. ImPorts steal moments for hurt and comfort, as well as moments of revelation and intimacy.

Even for those left unscathed, they must swiftly transfer through the White City and travel back to their home factions via conventional means, or risk causing dimensional chaos as more ImPorts arrive behind them.

THE QUIET

Once the Death Train arrives at the White City with the last of the Synod attendees on board, it seems like the worst is over. While anyone wanting to leave the city is free to use conventional means to do so, some choose to remain in Florida to recuperate, strategize or tend to the wounded.

For three days, everything looks like it might be returning to normal.

ImPorts are likely to resume life as usual, continuing with politicking and personal lives alike. After all, there's a year to go until the next Synod-- and despite everything, new ImPorts still arrive through the battered Porter facility.

DEATH DOME EXPANDS

On September 26th, sensors indicate a wave of cosmic radiation moving toward the White City. The reason is obvious enough: damage to the Porter has destabilized the Death Dome and now it's rapidly expanding. If it isn't stopped, it'll swallow the city within days. After that, scientists fear it may tear through the entire planet.

The White Tower immediately puts out a call for aid. Citizens of the city will have to be evacuated en masse. They plead for every imPort who is able to come forward and work to halt the growth of the Dome using whatever means necessary. If they don't work together, no one's getting out of this alive.

Most terrifying of all, the Death Dome's "cosmic radiation" causes permanent death, shredding and scattering energy and matter across the multiverse. Unshielded contact means no resurrection within this world ever again. To those who dream of someday returning to home dimensions, the mysteries of these physics is steeped with terrifying unknowns.

[OOC: Per this OOC plotting question, contact with the Death Dome destroys the AU version of a character permanently, but not their MoM counterpart. See the thread for more details.]

UNTIMELY ARRIVALS

Anyone Porting in during the Death Dome expansion, whether for the first time or resurrecting, finds the Porter facility is horrifically unstable. Heavy strands of permanently lethal entropic energy weave through visible cracks in the walls. They must escape through a Gate as quickly as possible, or risk an untimely death!

Under pressure, it might be harrowing to choose an ImPort city and faction. No sooner than they do, and step through the Gate, that they find that the world is in uproar, though their new home may well be in denial, strategically or otherwise.

FINAL OUTCOMES

At the nth hour, on September 30, two ImPorts, Shouta and Tomura of Equality Before Law make it into the Porter and manage, incredibly, to stabilize the damaged Fate technology with use of reality-warping abilities.

As the Death Dome begins to shrink back to its original circumference, it leaves behind a bizarre, scarred landscape, and a fine dusting of eerie crystalline particles of inscrutable chemical makeup. It may take years before the land is arable again, but the day is saved. For now.

"So we'll go home," she replies smoothly, as if it's that easy.

She picks her jacket up and slides it back on. People have also re-shuffled to make room, so she moves to sit beside him. She tries to give him another once-over.

"Anything I can do?"

At the voice, even a familiar one, Wen Ning pulls away and glares. Then he takes a moment to truly recognize who's approached him and his whole body language shifts. His shoulders relax and his expression eases from anger into sadness.

He doesn't even address him. He starts to, but the name doesn't make it out of his mouth. Instead he just nods, allowing Lan Wangji to lead him away from the window.

The other man has to know about Wei Wuxian by now - if not from his brother than from any other number of methods. He keeps a hand on Chenqing. Even if the younger Lan sibling might deserve to hold onto it just as much as he does, if not more, he's not willing to give it up yet.

Only Jonas isn't there. He's undeniably present right up to the moment blade should make contact with skin. Then he's just gone.

Rather, he's standing several feet away, but with David's back to him, it's probably hard to notice him before he fires a warning shot. The M16 is in his hands now, though there couldn't have possibly been enough time for him to dodge the attack, let alone unsling his weapon.

"You don't win this," he says. Unlike David, he's still willing to talk. He could have had a clean shot, but he didn't take it.

What the hell? David just... he needs a moment to process this. How could that have happened? Dammit. The guy's imPort, not human. The guy is an imPort with fucked up powers. How does he deal with this?

"Yeah, people have told me that a lot of times before. Most of them genocidal."

He needs a better approach to this. David lashes out with his powers. Not for Jonas. He reaches for every bit of tech in the area, looking for an answer. Robutlers. He can feel them. And David calls.

"I've survived everything that has been thrown at me. Turns out to stop me, you have to tear out my heart."

"I need a healer," David says. A. Not Josh. He doesn't know if he can face the guy after Kavinsky died.

"Laurie, I'm not sure I should be allowed to sleep. I don't... I think I need to see this."

For Krakoa. He has to witness what they lose here today.

"Everything is horrible. It's like it's all ending."

Jonas keeps a steady aim now. His expression is simultaneously patient and weary, like he's watching a play he's seen rehearsed several times already. However the surrounding machinery responds to David, it doesn't seem to demand any of his attention.

"I'd rather not."

He fires the gun instead.

Problem with guns. They have bullets. Advantage of his psychic weapons is that they can be more than that. Shields are weapons. Which is why he's pushing one up in front of him just in time for bullets to ping off of it.

"If you want to die, just fucking off yourself. Go into the Death Dome and cease and leave the rest of us alone!"

Jonas sighs at that suggestion. He lowers the gun, hugging it against his chest, and tucks the nozzle under his chin.

"Fucking off myself," he repeats. "Like this?"

He pulls the trigger.

And nothing happens.

What? That... David's a bit too shocked to know what to say. He just watched the man try and off himself. Or was it a lie? Did that mean David had never been in danger?

Josh, Laurie. He can't fail them. After everything, they had to keep going. But with the gun lowered David acts again, throwing another psychic blade toward Jonas. He can't stop. Never stop. Everyone's lives count on it.

Once more, David's aim ought to have been perfect. Somehow, though Jonas doesn't move an inch, the blade misses him anyway. It soars right past him, lodging into the wall behind him.

Jonas shuts his eyes for a brief moment, gathering his thinning patience. Then he raises his gun to take aim at David. He's given every warning. It's time to start shooting. The weapon has apparently decided to function now, because it fires again and again and again in an unwavering burst.

"You ever consider using your powers for good? They're ample. In the worst ways."

Someone like this would be perfect for literally any faction, but no, he's insane.

Having wasted all his rounds, Jonas lowers the gun and ejects the magazine, preparing to reload. "Destroying the Porter will prevent any more like us from arriving in this world," he explains as he pulls fresh cartridges from his pocket. "The imPorts who are already here will die within days and this world can begin to heal from the damage we've done to it. If you can't see how that's a cure, you haven't been paying attention."

"It's murder!" David said. And while the guy is preparing to reload David drops the shield and runs. It's stupid. The guy won't be there, but what David needs is time. Every last second is his technopathy diving into more bombs and disabling them.

"It's a fucking genocide you high and mighty asshole. The gate stabilizes the fucking tear in the world you absolute fucking BUFFOON!"

Yeah, David's been studying the research of Stark's that he was sent. And this didn't strike him as a good way to help anything.

"I understand how the damn Porter works perfectly well, and you're dooming the whole world."

Because the porter channels the energy from the breach in reality. That's one of the things the DO know, if he blows the Porter, then this is all going to go a lot worse.

"But by all means, destroy the world because you hate living."

The man is frustrating and David is close enough now to tackle him, but instead he swings with a blade. Why won't he just die.

Triggered by that intent, space-time bends once more. One second, Jonas is giving David a pitying look, just as he gets near enough to touch. The next, he's vanished.

"I'm not destroying the world," Jonas says, standing in the spot where this all started. His gun is strapped to his back, his hands occupied with something else: one of the bombs. This one's electronics are live again, or possibly they never stopped, because this particular bomb wasn't here a moment ago. At least, not this iteration of it.

He bends down to place it beside its twin.

"I'm fixing a mistake."

Electronics. Really, they've got to go with basic chemical reactions if they want real results, because David's forcing his will into the bomb and whispering to the wiring that it doesn't want to work. That the charge is a pain to pass. That the timer isn't worth the attention. That it just wants to short out.

"The mistake was you coming here today. Fix THAT mistake."

That would be Eli. Almost six and a half feet tall, built like a quarterback, and striding toward her with his pistol already aimed. Something about his approach is off, like she should have noticed him sooner, before he got this close. Like he came out of nowhere.

Some of his colleagues are inclined to give a warning. Eli is not. He doesn't recognize Ruka as one of the team, so he immediately fires a shot.

Jonas picks up the bomb that had been disabled earlier, pulling it to his chest and cradling it carefully. As he rises to his feet, the other Jonas — the one who's holding the gun — steps out from around the corner and fires once at David.

"I'm working on it," he says.

The first Jonas backs away quickly, ceding the fight to his double.

A second. Okay, that explains it. David hates this. But his weapons are as fast as a thought, so he raises one toward the new Jonas. It's up fast.

It's not up fast enough. Fast enough would have stopped the thing dead. As it was, he calculated the angle wrong and wasn't fast and so the bullet deflect, but still hits him some. A shot cutting through the meat of his thigh, and David hisses. The pain is bad.

He's been through worse.

"I'm getting exactly where I need to go," Jonas replies, circling around to check on the new bomb. He fires a couple more shots as he walks, just to keep David busy with his shields.

Meanwhile, in the periphery, the other Jonas keeps retreating. He's still clutching the disabled bomb, but his attention is fixed on his future self.

Perhaps the man is of two minds with himself, and that doesn’t help David. David who is keeping up a shield with one hand and throwing a knife at the Jonas shooting at him.

And his mind? Reaches out to arm the bomb in the hands of the one clutching it, turning the timer down. Blow yourself up you fucking freak.

“Maybe we should all just go boom.”

This time, the knife hits Jonas in the shoulder. It doesn't exactly land, but it cuts deep as it flies past him, and it's enough to get him to stop shooting for a second.

Off to the side, the other Jonas looks down as the bomb in his arms comes back to life. Unfortunately, since his older self is standing across the room, it certainly won't be exploding as long as this Jonas is holding it. Much like the gun in his double's earlier demonstration, the timer refuses to acknowledge the intended effect. As far as it's concerned, time isn't passing at all.

"Wrong one," he and his older double both explain helpfully to David in unison, just as the double resumes firing.
