1. WHITE TOWER; before quantum leap

[ It’s not that Kaneki was born a bad person; he is in fact the epitome of “the way to hell is paved with good intentions” because all of this started with wanting to do good and spiraled down to whatever he is now. Ken is a man in love; he is in love with his wife who is still back in their original world, he is in love with his husband who was ported out years ago – and the love he feels for them, after so many years without them, turned into loss. And loss turned into bitterness, anger, frustration, despair. And Kaneki does not deal well with any of that. He blamed himself at first, but eventually blamed the world.

The world is wrong. The Porter is wrong.

And he is tired of living in the shadow of a machine that nobody really controls – or rather, don’t know how to control. Because, in his mind, he is certain it IS possible to do that. If only he can get to it.

And that’s his plan, to get to it by reaching the highest position as the High Chancellor. He has few bad beans on his way, but he is certain he can pluck them out. And with that single objective in his mind, Kaneki grew to become a member of the Parliament of White Tower, but also a vicious assassin for the faction. Not only that, but his biology – a half-ghoul, who can only consume humans – became well known and he too became well known as the “One Eyed Reaper”, the one who does not leave anything behind (because he eats them, yeah!). And he embraced this title quite well, standing tall, often with an angry expression (also called “resting bitch face syndrome”) and little patience for anyone that will not help his objective.

Few people get to see a much more gentle side of him, often reserved to his current lover Ashlynn, mentor, and allies. Towards everyone else, he is cold, often angry, if not downright vicious. Careful not to step on his toes – he bites. ]

2. WHITE TOWER; post quantum leap

[ waking up in the middle of a room with a woman pretty much on top of him was not something he expected happening, but it is something that did happen. Confusion hit, naturally, but after calming down and speaking to Ashlynn, kaneki learned a bit about this place and the person that he just stole the body from (well, technically it’s himself, right? A version of himself. Kaneki is familiar with alternative timelines by now, if only because that’s what he thinks it happened with that other Kaneki who left last year). Anyway, about what he learned-

None of it was good. And he hates everything he heard.

This world, not only is confusing, but it’s also terrifying, and the person Kaneki just stole the body from – well, he is completely insane. Naturally Ken didn’t share all of his thoughts with Ashlynn, but she probably picked on it from the terrified expressions Ken made. A psychotic killer, an assassin, and someone who willing eats other people, who was recently hired to kill the High Chancellor and wants to take over the place so he can control the Porter. Insane, that person is insane.

Do you know who is not insane? This Kaneki, who actually realizes this is bad. Given how involved original Kaneki was, doesn’t that mean he too is involved, even if he doesn’t want to be? People will recognize him, people will realize it’s not him, and given how murderous this whole faction seems to be, won’t they just go in for an easy kill? Kaneki realizes he is in danger and he realizes he should leave.

Ashlynn has been extremely helpful, but Kaneki doesn’t want to tell her he is planning on leaving (deflecting, that’s the word. Becoming a traitor is also a good way to describe it). But he can’t stay here and thus he decides to at least explore his options. Right now, he can be found at a library, reading through newspapers and articles, learning about the factions and the current state of the world. He is quick to notice Krakoa could a good faction to join but also easy to get to, considering what Ashlynn told him about Josh.

And thinking of him actually makes his face twist. Can he… really just go there and release him? While the woman holding him captive said so, in the end Kaneki is worried if he has to fight someone, too. He doesn’t want to give away that he is not the original Kaneki, and he doesn’t want to be too involved, either. At the same time, it feels so cruel to leave that person, even if Kaneki never met Josh. ] What do I do…? [ with a frustrated sigh, Kaneki passes his hands through his now white hair. Maybe the network… maybe someone else is like him? He can’t be the only one that suddenly just woke up in this place and replaced the original person living here. Right…? ]

For continuity sake, Kaneki will end up figthing Kavinsky after this. That's when he will make a network, asking for help. He will be offered help from Jane Porter (from Krakoa) during this post, but Kaneki decides to go save Josh first. He and Josh will be arriving in Krakoa thanks to Luther's powers.

3. KRAKOA; post-arrival

[ Kaneki arrived to Krakoa a complete and utter mess. He saved Josh and brought him along, and Luther came to pick him and Josh up and of course the man had no idea who Kaneki was (and most likely only knew him as “that guy who eats people”). And then in Krakoa, Kaneki had to try and explain this whole mess and how he really is not that guy who eats people (actually, he does. But not the way the other Kaneki did!!).

To add to all of that, Kaneki killed someone. He promised to himself he’d never kill a person, he’d never kill a human. And he did. It broke him completely, his mind and his heart. And sure the person he killed was an imPort and he was revived, but Ken had never killed before.

The days after his arrival are spent mostly avoiding everyone. Kaneki just wants to be left alone, as far away from people as possible. He stays by the beach while he stares down at his hands, all of him broken thanks to everything that has been happening. He doesn’t even remember how he killed Kavinsky, but everytime he remembers him dead, kaneki gags and actually vomits. He has nothing left in his stomach by now, but that will continue to happen – and he cries and sobs like a child, unable to control himself.

what did he do?!

This shouldn’t be happening. None of this should be happening. Why does everything happen to him? ]

4. KRAKOA; general/happier prompt

[ Naturally, Kaneki can’t just cry forever. He still feels sick and still cries whenever he remembers what he did, but Ken comes to the realization that he… might be here forever. So eventually he moves from his hiding place and actually joins the rest of the island. It’s surprising to see so many children around, but they seem happy and in a way, that calms his heart a little.

From time to time he hears his name and there is a strong feeling of fear and despair creeping right behind him, but it passes soon enough when he notices it’s a kid asking him if he’d like to play. “No, thank you” is always the polite answer he gives, but he does watch the children happily enjoying their time, as if the world outside this island wasn’t completely broken and messed up. Maybe that’s the point of this place.

Neverland.

Well, he is here too, so that makes him one of the lost boys. If he has to live in this world, he is glad he is allowed to be on this island, at least. ]

[Katsuki just. Makes this face at first. Why is it always hands?

He recovers quickly, smirking as he runs at him. But he doesn't use any explosions to propel himself, he merely sprints and tries to get close to Kaneki's face, reaching for the Kagune that covers part of it.]

I like it.

[ hands, eyes, mouths. Kaneki sure would love to know.

When Bakugou rushes towards him, he moves his arm to protect himself, but there is a hand - what is this boy doing? kaneki blinks , but it hits him an explosion was about to come and thus he uses one kagune to push himself away.

By now he knows that technique, Bakugou has done it before ]

Damnit-!

[Katsuki stumbles back. He should have expected that. It's no use fighting Kaneki when he's thinking clearly, because he'll be able to block and counter anything Katsuki can dish out right now. So instead of attacking him, he takes off his gloves, staring at Kaneki as he bites down on his own arm.]

[ Kaneki is ready for an explosion to come, but it never does. He is confused, though he is even more confused when he watches Bakugou bite himself]

Wha- what are you-?! [ Bakugou what the fuck]

[Katsuki doesn't flinch; he bites down harder to draw a bit of blood, staining his fingers when he presses down on it.]

Hm. I guess I taste okay.

[ all of Kaneki reacts and that includes the kagune. It now hoovers over Kaneki, eyes stuck on the blood, and mouths wide open, and gurgling sounds come from them; they can't form exact words but they sure are trying to say the word "eat".

the half-ghouls covers his mouth and nose with his hands immediately before he screams back "Stop it!", but Kaneki's best chance is to try and step away and gain good distance between the two. Sure, kaneki's body is stronger. His self-control is not. ]

[Katsuki's eyes widen as Kaneki's kagune reacts. In a way, it reminds him of Shoji's quirk, but a lot more creepy.]

Hey- Don't run away from me!

[Katsuki tries to go after Kaneki. He just needs to get close, close enough to go after his eye or mouth-

He won't be useless. He can't live with that.]

[ don't run away he says!

And Bakugou is coming after him and eventually the half ghoul falls back with a gasp, hands still desperately trying not to let go of Kaneki's mouth. The kagune does not falter, though: in fact it wants to go forward, and it would if it wasn't for Kaneki's attempt at controlling it.

It continues to speak while the mouths drool, bark confusing words like "Taste" or "Sweet" or "Bite". Small little words, barely understood, until a big tendril rises and actually screams ] Bite, you idiiiiot!

[ Well, THAT at least startles Kaneki enough. There is a limit to how fucking weird that things is, and not even Kaneki is ready for it. What the hell is wrong with his body???? ]

[Katsuki starts running at Kaneki until the large tendril rises and...talks?]

What the fuck?

[He whispers to himself, wiping some blood on one of the gloves and throwing it across the beach, hoping it will distract his kagune. Which apparently has a mind of its own.]

[ it certainly kind of does. Welcome to Tokyo Ghoul, Katsuki. It's horribly confusing.

Kaneki is the one looking at the glove, and the whole mass of whatever makes up the kagune turns too. The mouth that just spoke does not, though. It doesn't have the eyes, but it's totally staring at the other -

and suddenly it vanishes.

All of it does. Kaneki is not going to do this, he can't. He is starving again and his powers are weird, creepy, and they terrify him after hearing the freaking kagune talk. Nevermind that he can turn into a 10meter centipede monster - his kagune can talk.

Kaneki is left gasping, nibbling on his own hand as he tries to control his hunger ] w-what... are you doing...?! [ it's unknown if kaneki is asking Bakugou or himself that question. ]

[It's pretty fucking horrifying, but it's also kind of cool. Katsuki stares, tense as Kaneki's kagune follows his gaze-

But then it disappears, and he finally gets a good look at Kaneki, at how bad this is for him. At what he's done. Again.

He swallows, his mouth dry, putting his other glove back over the wound for now but not approaching just yet. Kaneki looks like a wreck, and it's his fault.]

I-

[ kaneki looks up at Bakugou and then at his hand. he can still smell his blood, he can almost taste it. Just a little, just a little-

the glove covers the wound and he feels his stomach twisting. In the end, the kagune was only stating what he wanted to do, right? He only wanted a bite- kaneki's hand moves, trying to reach for Bakugou's arm.

Just a lick, just a bite- it's fine, isn't it? There is blood flowing already, he can have that, he can take that. ]

[He can't apologize. The words won't come. But then Kaneki moves toward him and Katsuki steps back.]

Kaneki, don't- I don't-

[He trips over a branch left in the sand, falling on his back. Shitshitshit. Katsuki tries to get up and move away before Kaneki can get to him. He fucked up. And he should have known better after last time.]

[ kaneki is practically on top of him by now, trying to use his body strength so he can't escape. His hand reaches for Bakugou's arm, tugging at the glove so he can expose the wound and feel the sweet smell once again - the taste too because he wants a taste.

And Kaneki will tug Bakugou's arm so he can lick the wound and lap at the blood tainting the other's skin ]

[Katsuki's breathing begins to shorten now as he comes close to hyperventilating. He's going to die. He's actually going to die this time. Kaneki's tongue stings and yet it sends electric shocks up his spine. Fucking focus. Is this how he wants to die?

Katsuki tries not to move while Kaneki licks his arm, using his free hand to attempt to jab him in the eye.]

[ Kaneki nibbles the skin around the wound, leaving small cuts thanks to his teeth, but nothing too deep. However, he is quick to move his hand to stop Bakugou's, tugging it to the side - and that's when Kaneki sees the shoulder.

That's right, a mark. His mark. That place was his, wasn't it? Kaneki suddenly dives in, but he stops himself before he bites down. His mouth lingers against the fabric still covering the skin and the hand tugging Bakugou's arm to the side slowly releases its grip. ]

Why... didn't you use your quirk? [ Kaneki breathes out, shakily. he regained his self control and he has no idea how, but he is not going to move just yet, afraid that he will lose control if he does ]

[Kaneki is being oddly gentle. Maybe he won't die. Maybe he's in control. But he can't risk it. Katsuki's eyes widen in panic when Kaneki stops his attack, but he stays frozen while Kaneki looks over his shoulder, tensing up and preparing for the same fire-hot pain from before-

But nothing happens.

He almost wishes something did happen, if it meant avoiding that question. Shame and bitterness twists in his chest and his whole body starts shaking.]

S-shut up. Shut up. SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!

[ bakugou is screaming and kaneki's whole body is on fire. Still, once again he controls himself, and now Kaneki moves off the other to sit further away from him, while he avoids looking back at his friend.

He did it again. he is always attacking others, isn't he? Always hurting others. Kaneki wants to be stronger, but it's impossible, isn't it?

He cleans his mouth with the back of his hand, trying to forget the taste that insists on overloading all of his senses. kaneki is starving, he really is ]

[Katsuki stumbles back, clutching his head. Weak. He's weak. And he almost made Kaneki commit murder.

How's he supposed to accomplish any of this when he can't even fight one half-ghoul? Katsuki's head snaps up and then he snarls, running off back to the house before Kaneki can see him panic.]

[ kaneki won't go after him, he can't. As much as he'd like to, as much as he wishes to understand, right now he can't. He will stay behind and try to calm down, try to push his hunger away.

Plus, Bakugou is upset, and he probably needs to stay away from ken right now, so he will give him some space. Kaneki will come back to the small apartment around dinner time - he is bringing along some take-out he bougt. He is mostly quiet coming in, whispering a small "I'm back" as he opens the door. ]

[Kaneki doesn't follow him. Of course he doesn't. He might even disappear entirely after this. Numbly, Katsuki opens the bottle of liquor meant for the molotovs, because fuck it if he's going to take over White Tower.

But Kaneki does return.

And Katsuki nearly throws the hairdryer at him until he sees who it is, his face flushed.]

Oh. S'you.

[ kaneki looks at Bakugou for a moment, moving to place the food on the table and then reaching to take the bottle of liquor away from him ]

Bakugou... [ having a conversation while he is drunk is... not going to be the best. But he wants to talk to him ] I'm sorry. [ that he didn't come after him, that he attacked him again, that he bit him, that he couldn't control himself. But also: ] I'm sorry I didn't notice. [ that he didn't have his quirk.

Kaneki reaches for Bakugou's hand, to gently squeeze it. Ken has been wallowing in self pity for who knows how long and didn't even see that Bakugou was in pain. He is the shittiest of friends. ]

Mine- [Katsuki growls, reaching for the bottle.] What? You gonna fucking take that away too? Is there nothin' this shitty place won't take from us?! Huh?!

[He accidentally stumbles into Kaneki's chest, stunning him enough to stare at him, initially in confusion before annoyance twists his features.]

You're always apologizin'-

When I'm the one who-

[Don't. Don't do this. Don't make him feel. Kaneki squeezes his hand and despite the fog that clouds his mind, he knows he doesn't have to admit anything. He crumbles against Kaneki, burying his face in his shoulder.]

...M'sorry.

[ kaneki reaches the back of Katsuki's head, fingers gently caressing the strands of his now orange hair, allowing him to stay like that, pressing his face against his shoulder ]

It's not your fault. [ kaneki should have noticed. It was obvious, from the start, but he didn't see (or maybe he didn't want to see?). He is a damned idiot and that's why Kaneki is apologizing. Katsuki's quirk means so much to him, and yet he is without it - it must feel terrible - and meanwhile Kaneki was crying about everything happening to himself and it didn't cross his mind that Bakugou was suffering as well.

he is so unfair and pathetic. What a shitty friend. ]

It has been so hard on you - I should have seen it.

[It's true that he's felt awful this entire time. Maybe he deserves this. Maybe being 'quirkless' was justice. And yet he wanted to see everyone again. He didn't want to be stuck here.

Seeing Kaneki again had helped. He wasn't alone and one of his best friends was here. But he couldn't protect Kaneki from harm. Not really.

Kaneki's touch is calming and he doesn't want to move this time. Let him have this.]
